Meet the Lakers' New Assistant Coaches

Former NBA Players and Veteran Coaches Join Darvin Ham's Staff

The Los Angeles Lakers have announced the hiring of five new assistant coaches to join head coach Darvin Ham's staff. The newcomers include former NBA players, experienced coaches, and rising stars in the coaching ranks.

Phil Handy

Phil Handy, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets, joins the Lakers as the team's assistant coach for player development. Handy has a reputation as one of the league's top player development coaches, having worked with some of the NBA's most talented players, including Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, and Jason Kidd.

Jordan Ott

Jordan Ott, a former NBA player who played for the Lakers during the 2010-11 season, returns to the franchise as an assistant coach. Ott has spent the past several years coaching at the college level, most recently as an assistant coach at the University of California, Berkeley.

Quinton Crawford

Quinton Crawford, a former NBA player who played for the Lakers during the 2000-01 season, joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach. Crawford has previously served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles D-Fenders, the Lakers' G League affiliate.

Jason Kidd

Jason Kidd, a former NBA player and head coach, joins the Lakers as an assistant coach. Kidd has a wealth of experience as both a player and coach, having won an NBA championship as a player with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and serving as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2014 to 2018.

Mike Penberthy

Mike Penberthy, a former assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings, joins the Lakers as an assistant coach. Penberthy has a reputation as a defensive specialist, having helped the Kings improve their defensive efficiency during his tenure.

The addition of these five new assistant coaches gives Darvin Ham a diverse and experienced staff to help him guide the Lakers back to contention in the upcoming season.
