According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, the tornado swept through Greenfield at approximately 4:30 pm on Tuesday, May 22, 2024. The storm caused significant damage to the city, with aerial footage showing numerous flattened homes and businesses.

The NWS has rated the tornado as an EF3, indicating that it had wind speeds of at least 136 mph. This makes the Greenfield tornado the strongest to hit Iowa since 2018.

Emergency responders are currently conducting search and rescue operations in Greenfield. Multiple fatalities and injuries have been reported, but the exact number is still being determined.
